Dentistry Specifically for Children
Children’s smiles need a different kind of dental care than their parents and older siblings. Since children’s teeth and oral structures are still developing, taking care of young smiles is as much about preparing them for the future as it is maintaining them in the present. We recommend bringing children to our office for a “well baby exam” within six months of when the first tooth appears, or no later than their first birthday. By the age of three, children should begin a regular schedule of routine checkups and cleanings along with the rest of the family.
Treating and Protecting Young Teeth
For the most part, children’s dentistry focuses especially on prevention by teaching children good hygiene techniques and providing preventive services like fluoride and dental sealants. Fluoride boosts children’s tooth enamel protection against cavity-causing oral bacteria, and sealants protect the chewing surfaces of molars, preventing plaque and food debris from gathering there. If your child does exhibit a dental issue, Dr. Johnson-G’Sell will recommend appropriate treatment while protecting your child’s oral health development. Some common treatments include:
- Fillings
- Pulpotomies (similar to root canal treatment)
- Space maintainers
- Stainless steel crowns
For the child nervous about seeing the dentist, Dr. Johnson-G’Sell and her team are happy to assist parents around such a situation. Magnolia Family Dental offers nitrous oxide, better known as laughing gas, to help make your child’s trip to the dentist as pleasant as possible.
